WorldCom Unveils A La Carte Hosting Value Adds
Peter Lambert
06/12/2002 WorldCom Inc. announced a new menu of value-added, 'a la carte' hosting services designed to address rapid installation, integration and scalability for its Internet colocation customer. WorldCom Data Storage Services, Global Server Load Balancing Services, and IP VPN Remote Services with Colocation offer cost-effective managed solutions to companies facing business continuity, Web site performance, and remote/mobile connectivity challenges, according to the global Internet access and business data service provider. “This new menu of a la carte hosting services gives our customers the flexibility to acquire the specific capability their business needs, when they want it,” says Rebecca Carr, director of WorldCom Global Hosting Services. “Individually or in tandem, each is a powerful, tailored enhancement to their WorldCom hosting solution.” - WorldCom Data Storage Services for subscription, network-based storage and tape backup comprises Storage Area Network (SAN) Services, for fully managed primary storage capacity for database and transaction-oriented applications; Network Attached Storage (NAS) Services, for managed primary storage capacity for file serving applications; and Backup and Restore Services, for data backup via a back-net connection from the customer's colocation space to a special storage cage. The services are backed by service level guarantees and are available now to customers served by Internet data centers in Boston; Chicago; Carteret, N.J.; San Jose and Northern Virginia. - WorldCom Global Server Load Balancing Services, for dynamic distribution of Internet traffic among multiple Web servers housed in geographically dispersed WorldCom data centers, are designed to maximize Web server responsiveness, uptime and dependability by diverting traffic from an unavailable server to ensure business continuity. Available now in all U.S. Internet Data Centers and also priced on a per-month basis, the services are aimed particularly at e-commerce Web sites running mission-critical applications such as shopping carts and database software. - WorldCom IP VPN Remote Services with Colocation, a fully managed service that WorldCom says will provide traveling, telecommuting and remotely located employees across 80 countries with reliable, securely encrypted access to applications (from e-mail to Net conferencing), intranets, extranets and the Internet. It is currently available to customers served by any of WorldCom's data centers in the U.S. “Our research on enterprise purchasing trends indicates that service flexibility and scalability are at the top of most enterprises' selection criteria lists for outsourced solutions,” Carrie Lewis, senior analyst at the Yankee Group, said in a statement. “WorldCom's rollout of scalable managed services - offered on a flexible, pick and choose a la carte basis - provides customers the opportunity to tailor their IT needs to meet their specific and changing requirements, and serves as a stepping stone to WorldCom's full offering of managed hosting services.”
