Alcatel Unveils Media Gateway

Alcatel today publicly introduced its 7670 RSP Media Gateway.

The product, initially targeted a trunking applications, provides voice over ATM using ATM adaption layer (AAL) 1 or 2 and requisite voice processing. It is based on the company’s 7670 routing switch platform and its integrated multiprotocol ATM/MPLS. The company expects to add voice over IP functionality to the product toward the end of this year.

The 7670 RSP Media Gateway is targeted exclusively at meeting the needs of established PSTN and mobile service providers, according to Jim Guillet, assistant vice president of product marketing for Alcatel worldwide and Andrew Missing, director of product marketing for Alcatel in the U.S. It addresses such carriers’ need for platforms that optimize operating and capital expenditures; their need for service continuity during the move to next generation networks; and their interest in investment protection. That means it offers “high levels of scalability, high fabric capacity and a unified infrastructure,” says Guillet.

Cellular companies could use this product for tandem applications (meaning backhauling traffic from various base stations) or could use it to deploy a single unified network to carry voice and data.

The product, which includes a Megaco softswitch interface, now in 15 trialing worldwide and shipping since December 2001, became generally available last month.
