IP Telephony Gaining Interest
09/19/2001
About 86 percent of U.S. companies surveyed by Sage Research Inc. (www.sageresearch.com) said that they’re in various stages of evaluating or deploying IP telephony. However, Sage’s study highlights some of the factors that may prevent businesses from deploying IP telephony, such as fear of using an immature technology and skepticism about the level of cost savings that can be attained. “We've all heard the rosy forecasts for IP telephony,” Kathryn Korostoff, Sage's president, said in a statement. “Sage designed this study to measure actual deployment plans to get a realistic, conservative measure of organizations’ plans to use IP telephony. While these results indicate a significant near-term opportunity, the research also identifies some risk factors. These will need to be addressed by suppliers if customer plans are to be fully realized.” In its report “Opportunities in IP Telephony: A Market Analysis, Sage says that other things IP telephony equipment vendors must keep in mind include the fact that businesses tend to hang on to their PBX equipment well after it has been depreciated, and that existing PBXs are typically underutilized. Sage reports that almost half of the organizations surveyed said they have significantly fewer telephones connected to their PBX than the equipment allows.
