RCS Issues Fraud Warning to Cellular Phone Open Market Traders

TEL AVIV, July 2 /PRNewswire/ -- RCS Limited (http:// www.rcs.com), the world's largest international trader of cellular phones, today announced a fraud warning to operators, distributors and wholesalers of cellular phones. Over the last quarter, RCS' network of cellular phone traders, spanning 128 countries, has reported an increase in fraudulent trading on the open market. Among the more common cases of fraud reported to RCS are a fictitious sales representative posing as an employee of an established company.

Jul. 2--The White Pages phone book, which helped connect the country for more than a century, is facing up to the fact that it no longer matters in most households. The latest sign of its shrunken role is a tentative deal in Missouri that would let AT&T stop automatic delivery to homes and businesses on the Missouri side of the Kansas City and St. Louis areas. Delivery of AT&T's Yellow Pages would not be affected, and there is no plan yet to stop automatic delivery in Kansas.

Jul. 2--Hollywood residents and visitors can now surf the web for free -- as long as they don't mind doing it outdoors. The city unveiled the free outdoor wireless internet network at a "wire cutting ceremony" Wednesday morning at the ArtsPark at Young Circle in downtown Hollywood. After commissioners cut the gray network cable at Wednesday's event, computers became able to detect the city's wireless network and users can connect after agreeing to the city's user agreement.

Kyrgyztelecom Deploys Cisco ASR 1000 Series Router

Kyrgyzstan-based telecom operator Kyrgyztelecom has deployed the Cisco ASR 1000 Series aggregation services router as the network platform to enable a more flexible and cost-effective delivery of broadband-based voice and data services to its subscribers. The project was implemented by Cisco's business partner in Kyrgyzstan Terratech. According to Cisco, the implementation is a key element of Kyrgyztelecom's plans to build a next-generation metro ethernet fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) aggregation network, initially in the capital of Bishkek and then across other cities.

Schools May Crack Down on Cell Phones

Jul. 2--The Aiken County Board of Education has passed first reading on an updated policy intended to crack down on cell phone misuse in middle and high schools. Previously, students could keep cell phones turned off in their bookbags during the school day. Students at Ridge Spring-Monetta High School will be exempted from the new procedure, because the school has no lockers.

Eastex Telephone, a rural carrier in the US, is upgrading its network with carrier VoIP services from Nortel. The carrier VoIP infrastructure is expected to enable Eastex to provide carrier-grade voice and multimedia services to its more than 34,000 residential and business subscribers across rural east Texas. According to Nortel, Eastex plans to upgrade its legacy DMS switches with its Communication Server (CS) 1500 softswitch, which will allow them to offer new communication services such as VoIP, Centrex IP business services and next-generation multimedia communications.

Puerto Rico-based mobile operator Open Mobile has selected Movius Interactive Corporation's clientless visual voicemail application. According to Movius, the MessageMe Plus enables voicemail information to be pushed to the user's mobile device and provides message details, including the name of the sender, the sender's number, the time the message was left and the length of the message. Open Mobile subscribers can review all their messages in one unified inbox, their SMS inbox, and select the message they want to listen to.

FairPoint Struggles to Reduce Debt

Jun. 26--Problems with keeping customers, and with sending out and collecting bills, have cut into FairPoint's income so much that the company says it must delay interest payments on the massive debt that it acquired when buying Verizon's phone lines. On Thursday, FairPoint asked bond-holders that have more than $500 million worth of notes due in 2018 to accept delayed payments. In a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, the company warns that if the offer does not go through, it might not be able to make its interest payments due Oct. 1.
