From NTIA to Cisco: A Serenade 10/30/2009 12:01
Well, I’ve greatly enjoyed giving Joe Nacchio a prison playlist. Alas, it is time to update and move on. But the whole music theme is working for me so, as we look back on this week’s news, brace yourselves. The perfect song for the NTIA and RUS, which can’t seem to meet any of their self-imposed broadband stimulus award deadlines? They Might Be Giants, “I Should Be Allowed to Think.” That’s in response to Larry Strickling’s comments to the Senate earlier this week that “We're going to take a few more weeks here to get this right. I will not fund a bad application.” Google needs a little Barry White while contemplating its Google Voice call-blocking issues, even as it proclaims support for net neutrality fairness. I give you “Practice What You Preach.” Alcatel-Lucent and Sprint sure could use some encouragement right about now, fresh off their dismal third-quarter earnings. How about Peter Gabriel and “Don’t Give Up”? Kudos are in order, though, for Motorola and 8x8, each of whom had a pretty solid third quarter. Let’s go with Madonna and “I Deserve It.” Meanwhile, Cisco’s having a little trouble convincing Tandberg shareholders to approve its $3 billion takeover bid. Maybe executives need to pull a John Cusack, stand outside Tandberg’s bedroom (boardroom) window with a Bose instead of a boombox, and play a little Depeche Mode. “I Want You Now” seems apropos. Or Guns ‘n Roses, “You Could Be Mine.” Take your pick. (Note to self, with apologies to all of the artists who have recorded this one: “Enough Is Enough.”)
