Visant Strategies: Wireless Networks Push Telematics Adoption

02/23/2007

Better wireless networks, devices and operating systems are creating an ideal environment for telematics to flourish across the globe, according to a new Visant Strategies study, "Telematics 2007 and Beyond: The New Era of Networks and Applications."

Telematics use will rise dramatically into the next decade, the study found, as in-vehicle applications become usable thanks to high-speed wireless ecosystems.

"Seeing OnStar moving to a digital network is the first step in having this sector become a larger part of the wireless environment that will allow a more diverse set of applications to be offered and an enhancement of the applications being utilized so greatly today," said report author Lynnette Luna.

The study found that in-vehicle subscribers across the globe will grow eight-fold into the next decade with revenue for providers reaching nearly $20 billion in the three top world telematics markets: Europe, Japan and the United States.

"The telematics industry has always been innovative and produced decent numbers but the evolution of mobile wireless networks, handsets, operating systems, components and the growing number of meaningful applications all spell good fortune for in-vehicle providers and mobile carriers," said Larry Swasey of Visant Strategies.
