Mobile VoIP: If Viable, Who Will Win?
Kelly M. Teal
12/11/2008 The number of mobile VoIP users worldwide could reach as high as 100 million by 2011, up from 7 million in 2007. Revenue from the sector stands to reach $33.7 billion over the next two years. But the market likely won’t support more than two or three solid mobile VoIP competitors, given VoIP’s status as a near-commodity. The survivors will need brand name recognition, investor backing and millions of users to make any money. So who are the likely warriors in this space? It’s hard to say. This year alone, two of the bigger mobile VoIP companies have gone under and another two appear likely to go kaput, leaving an ever-smaller pool of competitors. But if we had to guess, we’d say Jajah and Skype – despite the eBay missteps – will come out on top.
