Developer Tries to Save Technological History
08/06/2008
It’s the birthplace of cell phones, microwave ovens and more great technological advances of the past hundred years. Now, a historic New Jersey laboratory appears to have been saved from the wrecking ball. Bell Laboratories’ New Jersey offices were scheduled for demolition to make way for smaller office buildings and single-family homes. But now, a potential savior ─ Somerset Development ─ wants to keep the complex from being razed. The company’s president is impressed with the facility’s architecture as much as its scientific history. His plan would modify the building only slightly to allow for retail space on the ground floor. Condos, apartments and office space would fill the space above.
