Annual Awards Program Recognizes WiMAX Industry Leaders
11/01/2007
Winners and Industry Choice nominees were selected by a judging panel of experts from the WiMAX community. The awards, in their second year, received more than 80 nominations — double that of the inaugural contest. Eliot Weinman, conference co-chair and president of Trendsmedia; Kelly Teal, business and regulatory editor of xchange; and Tara Seals, associate editor of xchange, presented the awards. “xchange would like to thank all the WiMAX World exhibitors for support of this awards program,” said Mike Saxby, publisher of xchange. “We are pleased to be able to provide a forum to showcase the incredible innovation occurring in the WiMAX arena. Congratulations to all of the winners that by virtue of a competitive field have proved to be the industry’s leaders.” The winners were selected by an independent judging panel, including Craig Mathias, principal, Farpoint Group; Will Strauss, principal analyst, Forward Concepts; Adlane Fellah, CEO and founder, Maravedis Inc.; Caroline Gabriel, lead research analyst, Rethink Research; Philip Marshall, vice president of enabling technologies, Yankee Group; James Farstadt, founder and president, rClient LLC; Michael Khalilian, chairman and president, IMS Forum; and representatives from xchange and Trendsmedia.
INDUSTRY CHOICE The Industry Choice award was chosen by the delegates at WiMAX World Europe Conference & Expo. This year’s judging committee selected 16 finalists from among 80 nominations. The peer award goes to the company delegates deemed to have made the most significant contribution to the WiMAX community this year.
Winner: Motorola Inc. This product is a leading example of WiMAX CPE that will be closely integrated with other networked devices. Motorola has a strong road map for incorporating WiMAX CPE into a full digital home strategy, with integration with wired broadband and home entertainment systems, or the potential for a wireless-only fixed/mobile quad-play system.
Runner-Up: Sequans Communications Sequans is currently the only company supplying both base station and subscriber station chips for fixed and mobile WiMAX. INDUSTRY INNOVATION This category includes leading-edge WiMAX technology, microelectronics, hardware, software and services that have the potential to transform the mobile and personal broadband industries. Entries were judged based on the unique technology, its impact on the market and world, and its benefit to service providers and end users.
Winner: Sprint Sprint is taking a leadership role in commercializing mobile WiMAX and disrupting the traditional status quo for mobile services in the U.S. market. To achieve this requires bold technical and commercial innovation and demands significant coordination among ecosystem partners coming from the traditional telecom, media, Internet and consumer electronic worlds. Runner-Up: WiNetworks Inc. WiNetworks takes an innovative approach to leverage residential infrastructure and enable lower network rollout costs, particularly for DBS providers. Its innovative solution is well-suited to integrate with both satellite and terrestrial macro-/micro-cellular networks. SYSTEM DESIGN
This includes box-level systems using WiMAX technology that includes approaches and methods above and beyond standardized minimums that enhance the total value of a WiMAX system. Nominees were judged based on general concept, application, feature set, benefits and standards compliance. Winner: ZyXELCommunications Corp. Picocells (for outdoor coverage in rural and other less-populated areas) and femtocells (for indoor applications) may be the most important WiMAX deployment strategy. ZyXEL’s products incorporate MIMO, broad configurability, management and adaptability, and support for fixed and mobile convergence. SERVICE PROVIDER DEPLOYMENT
This category includes behavior and characteristics of broadband wireless or WiMAX equipment operating in the field. Entries were judged based on network size (i.e. the number of base stations and CPEs deployed), volume of residential and business subscribers, monthly ARPU, range of services and bandwidth, ease of installation and adaptibility. Winner: Clearwire Corp. Clearwire has the most broadband wireless access subscribers worldwide (300,000) with 1,300 base stations and 250,000 CPEs installed. Clearwire is a pioneer in the WiMAX industry in the U.S. market. Its service includes various residential plug-and-play services as well as VoIP. Runner-Up: TowerStream TowerStream is a WISP offering broadband access for T1 Internet, DS3 and OC3 services. It is a leading operator in the provisioning of fixed broadband wireless services in U.S. markets. The company has considerable experience in delivering T1-like services profitably. CHIP DESIGN
This category includes 802.16-2004 (.16d) and 802.16-2005 (.16e) base station and terminal chips and chip sets, including PHY and/or MAC or higher-level solutions. Entries were based on novelty, completeness, silicon availability, power consumption and available options. Winner: Sequans Communications Sequans is currently the only company supplying both base station and subscriber station chips for fixed and mobile WiMAX Runner-Up: Beceem Communications Beceem is the first company to offer commercially available terminal chipsets for Wave 1 and Wave 2 mobile profiles of the WiMAX Forum. DEVICE/PERIPHERAL/APPLICATION SOFTWARE
This category includes any WiMAX-based device, fixed or mobile (not a base station or point-to-point/point-to-multipoint link) or systems software for a WiMAX product or installation. Nominations were judged based on concept, application, features and benefits. Winner: Airspan Networks Inc. This product is genuinely ground-breaking as it is one of the first in what will become a very important category — USB WiMAX devices with full MIMO support. This MIMO support should overcome some of the problems inherent in using 802.16e at relatively high frequencies in highly mobile formats, or indoors, making WiMAX more usable and more profitable. Runner-Up: Redline Communications The Redline Management Suite is one of the most tested and advanced examples in the category of device and network management — an area where WiMAX still lags other technologies. It provides highly usable graphical interfaces and can greatly enhance the efficiency of an operator’s system, and therefore, its support costs. WiMAX WORLD DIGITAL CITIES DEPLOYMENT
This new category, which was open to exhibitors, sponsors and presenters of both WiMAX World USA and Digital Cities Conferences, measures the performance metrics of WiMAX including throughput, latency and packet loss. The award also is determined by standards compliance, scalability, QoS and security, and the use of unlicensed and licensed wireless spectrum options. Winner: Telsima Corp. This deployment has the largest implementation of WiMAX product, carrier-class QoS with multiple threshold alarming and built-in implementation automation tools. Runner-Up: Nortel Networks Ltd. This deployment features the widest range of Wi-Fi and WiMAX product line, 802.16e product availability and carrier-class QoS.
