Get With the Program
Paula Bernier
07/01/2006
While perusing the GLOBALCOMM exhibitor list prior to the show I was surprised to find a dearth of content providers present. I’ve been to plenty of these shows, and I realize that programming has never been big at these major telecom-centric events. But, given the emphasis on telco TV these days, I thought the exhibitor list might evolve to include a good number of programming folks. In any case, given that both linear and on-demand programming are going to be key to unlocking the telco TV opportunity, my publisher, Mike Saxby, and I decided to present you this month with a handful of content-related stories as our cover package. Of course, this issue also contains a GLOBALCOMM roundup. But we also wanted to take a closer look at what programmers are doing and how that relates to the interests of the telcos — as well as cablecos, DBS suppliers, wireless operators, etc. So, for this month’s cover package, I spoke with a small cross-section of programming executives including Rich Cronin, president and CEO of the interactive gaming network known as GSN (See Advertising On Demand), as well as Penthouse’s CEO Marc Bell, and Michael H. Klein, who runs the Hustler family of products (See Courting the Adult Viewer). Also included in this issue are some suggestions from research and consulting firm MRG Inc. about how to create winning IPTV content strategies (See MRG Inc. on How to Create Winning IPTV Content Strategies). We hope you enjoy our content-related and other coverage in this issue. Stay tuned for more programming news and analysis from xchange in the months ahead. Until next time,
Paula Bernier
