WiMAX in the Real World
06/01/2006
Wrapping up this three-month month review of WiMAX wireless backhaul gear, we focus this issue on real-world implementation and performance data from the CWLab field testing team. The objectiveness and validity of our testing lies within the reproducibility of the data set. With this in mind, we have chosen to use open-source software to test the products. IPerf is an open-source benchmark currently supported by the National Laboratory for Applied Networking Research (NLANR), the Distribution Applications Support Team (DAST) and the University of Illinois. We have configured IPerf to utilize the full maximum transmission unit of the underlying network link layers (1,500 bytes) and have set the transmission control protocol (TCP) window size to 160 kilobytes for all tests. In addition, we have tuned for high-performance TCP testing following the guidelines outlined in RFC 1323 and recommended by the Advanced Networking Department of the Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center.
