options abound for telcos considering voip
05/01/2005
WITH UNE-P NO LONGER A VIABLE option, many CLECs are looking to get into VoIP services. But that is often more difficult than it seems. So a variety of companies are offering outsourced back-office VoIP solutions to help CLECs make the move into VoIP. Those solutions range from turnkey outsourced solutions to offering just parts of the VoIP puzzle, like support for E911 or CALEA.
The companies offering these outsourced solutions are too numerous to mention but include all kinds of companies from those like DCI Voice Solutions, Optivon Inc., XO Communications and others that offer VoIP termination and conversion and/or hosted VoIP-enabled services, to those like SNET DG and VeriSign Inc. that provide carriers with services related to signaling and ability to tap into necessary databases. Among the newer offers on the market including a back-office component is a solution from Onvoy Inc., a service provider based in Minneapolis, which recently has opened its Bandwagon wholesale consumer VoIP service to facilities-based CLECs. The Bandwagon service is packaged as a ready-to-sell consumer VoIP service, including a feature package, a customizable Web portal, equipment (such as terminal adaptors), billing, training materials for the retailer’s staff and a marketing package with a television advertisement. Volo Communications also offers a ubiquitous 911 solution to CLECs, IXCs, cable and wireless operators, ISPs, and resellers throughout North America, in addition to its other services targeted at carriers offering VoIP. On a separate front, billing company Profitec Inc. has upgraded its customer service and back-office capabilities so that VoIP resellers that require outsourced business service capabilities can have everything centrally provided. Profitec provides a full host of services for resellers, which includes everything from order entry to payment processing and virtually everything in between, as well as activations and 24-hour-per-day customer service. And NeuStar Inc. announced at the VON Spring Conference & Expo that it will offer Enhanced Service Request (ESR), which automates the placement customer order requests — such as porting or transferring phone numbers.
