Heads Up in a Downturn

11/18/2008

We’ve been through this before, and to similar effect: The onset of a telecom industry downturn — a byproduct, of course, of a much broader economic shift — makes everyone stop and take some anticipatory measures, creating the classic ripple effect.

Consumers, of course, look at their spending, which includes what might be a few “non-essential” services in their communications buckets. (That might be the sports package or movie channel bundle in their video service plans, for example. Or, more reasonably, their home phones.) Business owners, large and small, predict they will be smaller in both revenue and personnel, and make cuts accordingly. Service providers, in turn, look at their earnings expectations for the coming long winter — and having absolutely no clue how long said winter may last, predict the worst to protect themselves the best (or so they think, anyway).

If there’s a brightish spot to be seen anywhere in times like this, it’s in the technology developer space, where the pressure is on to provide systems and solutions that do more with less, and to leverage and bolster what is already there to eke out a bit more performance and a lot more value. The reality is that service providers still need to spend to operate, maintain, even expand and enhance their networks to serve their customers — they’re just going to be a lot more careful and thrifty about it.

The area where this tends to resonate the most is in the software sector of the industry — the sector encompassing everything from back-office management systems to service optimization platforms. This is an industry sector that always is talking about the importance of transformation, and it is — for better or worse — times like these that those messages ring the loudest with carriers.

The messages coming this week from the TeleManagement Forum’s event in Orlando are precisely that: Make sure your back office is pushing every bit of performance out of your network infrastructure. See what new systems might heighten the output of your existing platforms and stretch them even a little further. Ensure all that money you spent on the migration to an IP infrastructure is being fully utilized.

These are critical lessons that tend to fade into the background a bit when times are not so tough, only to bubble again to the surface when times are not so good. But regardless of the economic conditions that bring these issues into the limelight, it’s an important reminder of the vital role these technologies play in shaping and advancing broadband networks and services.
