AT&T, Verizon Fuel Rise in Business Ethernet Services

09/05/2008

Business Ethernet services continue to grow rapidly in the U.S. That’s according to the latest market share analysis from Vertical Systems Group. The number of installed domestic computer ports rose by more than 16 percent in the first half of this year.

So what companies led the way? AT&T (T) accounted for 21 percent of total ports. Verizon (VZ) came in second with 15 percent, even though its growth was slower than the other major providers.

"Most providers steadily increased their port deployments, spurred by new Ethernet service offerings and migration of larger customer networks. All of the major U.S. providers, with the exception of Verizon, reported double digit port growth in the first half of 2008," said Rick Malone, principal at Vertical Systems Group.

"The Competitive Provider segment was the fastest growing for the period, taking advantage of SMB opportunities and rollouts of Ethernet over copper. The other two provider segments, MSO and Incumbent, also experienced growth," Malone added.
