GENBAND Passes the App Server Baton to BroadSoft

Is this the start of an anti-conglomerate trend? A return to our industry focusing on core competencies? After a successful run in the applications server space, VoIP maestro GENBAND on Thursday said it was spinning off its M6 application server product line and customer base to fellow VoIP maestro BroadSoft Inc.. Rather than remaining Mozart and Salieri, in direct rivalry, the two have decided to make beautiful music together, with GENBAND turning its focus to its media gateway business.

“We are absolutely focused on growing our leadership position in gateways and at the same time it was important to GENBAND to find the right application-centric company who would ensure the continued success of our M6 customers,” Charlie Vogt, GENBAND’s CEO, told xchange. “Our relationship with BroadSoft provides partnering opportunities for us and a solid transition for our application customer base, so this is a win-win.”

GENBAND has made product development and made use of acquisitions, notably the buy of Nokia Siemens Networks’ media gateway assets, to strengthen its portfolio and clarify its market position.

This latest move is a bit of a no-brainer move: Synergy Research Group and Infonetics Research have recognized BroadSoft as the market leader in voice application servers and GENBAND as the leader in VoIP media gateway shipments. Why blow against the wind?
