Zhone Unwraps Higher Speed IP DSLAM Tandem

New Units Support VDSL and ADSL2+ with Speed and Reach In Mind

Aiming to help broadband service providers increase the speed and reach of their copper access networks, Zhone Technologies Inc. (ZHNE) today debuted two IP DSLAMs that support VDSL2 and ADSL2+ for single or bonded copper pairs.

The new Bitstorm products are targeted at operators looking to provide bigger bandwidth over great distances, as many service providers are finding FTTH networks too expensive to build and operate profitably.

Zhone’s BitStorm High Performance 100/100 is a 24-port VDSL2 IP DSLAM that the vendor says can deliver up to 100mbps of symmetrical bandwidth on each port. The unit also supports ADSL2+.

“Not everyone wants to go VDSL2 from the outset, which is why we provide ADSL2+ as a fallback in the same unit,” explained Uttam Singh, Zhone’s product management director.

The second IP DSLAM is the Bitstorm Reach Performance which provides 48 ports of ADSL2+ and works in single pair or bonded pair mode to provide more than 45mbps of bandwidth for short copper loops and up to 25mbps at a maximum distance of 10,000 feet, according to Zhone.

The Bitstorm High Performance is designed to support multiple high-definition (HD) video-stream consumption and high-end gaming in the home. The unit does not perform the actual video compression, but does perform error correction, said Singh.

Both applications are delay-intolerant, making symmetric bandwidth a must-have for service providers pushing bundled services to residential customers. The one-rack unit can be used in multidwelling units and outdoor cabinets.

The Bitstorm Reach Performance is a 1.5 rack unit IP/Ethernet DSLAM featuring support for ADSL 2+ bonding, built-in splitters and dual GigE and far-end uplink ports. The unit also supports bridged mode or advanced layer operations for “smart home” or business applications, according to the vendor.

Zhone hopes the new DSLAMs will help its build its presence in North America, where its business is primarily in small deployments and trials. That’s in sharp contrast to its service provider business outside the region, which is much broader, according to Singh.

The devices are available now. Zhone did not provide pricing.
