Pannaway Adds GPON, GigE Fabric in Broadband Access Makeover

Bob Wallace

Striving to shoehorn more features and power into its widely-used broadband access platforms for rural telcos and ILECs, Pannaway Networks has announced a new 10gig Ethernet switching fabric and a GPON blade for its MAGNM-20.

While much is made about Tier One telcos upgrading access network on a broad scale to deliver such service as TV, rurals, ILECs and other non-household name providers have been some of the true innovators and pioneers in these areas, but without fanfare.

Pannaway has been slugging it out in this aggressive market with Occam Networks, Inc. for this combined customer base in a volume business race. What these telcos lack as far as the deep pockets of the AT&Ts and Verizons of the world, they have proven they make up for as very early implementers of broadband access network infrastructure.

The upgrades to the recently acquired broadband access system include modules that support 2.5 GPON access and a higher-speed 10gigE transport fabric, which increases the speed of transport on the rings to 10gbps.

The new transport fabric and the blade will enter beta trials in the second quarter of this year, according to Pannaway.

Specifically, the new GPON OLT blade provides four, 2.5/1.2 OLT ports resulting in a capacity to service that exceeds 2300 end points per chassis, says Pannaway. Like its other access wares for telcos, the blade can be managed by the Broadband Access Manager.
