Cable Provider Taps Network Insight for Traffic Management Solution
08/07/2006
A nationwide cable provider has chosen Network Insight to implement a traffic management solution for the provider’s network. Network Insight, which specializes in professional and managed services related to Cisco service control engines (SCEs), will use its expertise to implement Cisco SCEs and perform an Oracle install project for the cable operator, the company said Monday. The contract calls for Network Insight to integrate its SCE’s collection manager with an Oracle database. In addition, Network Insight will create acceptable use policies (AUPs) for the network. These AUPs will govern usage by subscribers of the cable company and will be enforced by Network Insight’s configuration solution. The SCE can sit in-line or to the side of a service provider’s network collecting data on the traffic traversing it. Network information can then be sliced in hundreds of ways. For instance, a service provider may want to know how many subscribers use P2P in order to create appropriate tiered service offerings. A report can then be created to provide the statistical information to answer this very question. The cable operator plans to take the SCE's capabilities one step further – from monitoring to management. Network Insight helps service providers implement policies such as maximum bandwidth allocation by subscriber, then configures the SCE to enforce these policies. "By implementing service control, the cable operator will be able to optimize its current infrastructure, guarantee QoS for specific applications and ensure corporate policies are being adhered to,” said Chris Pond, Network Insight CEO. “This is a solution with considerable ROI.”
