FCC Approves AT&T’s Aloha License Buyout

02/05/2008

The FCC on Monday approved AT&T Inc.’s buyout of Aloha Partners LP and its spectrum holdings.

The order permits AT&T to move ahead with its $2.5 billion cash purchase of airwaves licenses that cover 196 million people in 281 markets.

The licenses reside in the 700MHz band that television broadcasters must vacate by next year. They’re not part of the spectrum that’s currently being auctioned, however.

AT&T will use the licenses for wireless content and data services, it has told the FCC. Aloha Partners, based in Providence, R.I., never used the airwaves to build a wireless network. It did, though, run two small market trials.
