FCC Strikes Video Exclusivity in MDUs
10/31/2007
The FCC today wiped out exclusivity clauses allowing only certain video providers to serve apartments, condos and other so-called multiple dwelling units (MDUs). The order doesn’t include developments such as master planned communities where homeowners’ associations often make exclusive agreements with video providers; homeowners have to foot a monthly fee whether they use that video company or not. However, the FCC said it will look into those arrangements, too. Commissioners said on Wednesday they want to foster competition in MDUs generally dominated by cable operators. Companies such as AT&T Inc. and Verizon Communications Inc. offer video programming now and have lobbied to be allowed into MDUs. FCC www.fcc.gov
