Getting a Hold on the iPhone
Paula Bernier
06/18/2008 It shouldn’t come as any surprise that mentions of the iPhone keep popping up in keynotes and panels this week at NXTcomm. Some people, like me during my ATIS TechThink panel on convergence, have been singing its praises (and the praises of Apple TV and iTunes, which with the iPhone create a great converged service that is available today). Some, like Sun Microsystems Inc. Chairman Scott McNealy, wish the iPhone would just go away. And some, like Randall Stephenson, chairman, president and CEO of AT&T Inc. (the U.S. service provider for the iPhone), continue to promote the iPhone and even show off the new 3G version of the device — if only for a moment. Word is that the folks at Apple were in the audience yesterday during Stephenson’s speech and took the new 3G iPhone, which is not yet available, off his hands the moment he exited the stage. So, it seems, Apple likes to keep a tight hold on its products from numerous fronts.
