Symmetricom Enters IPTV Service Quality Assuarnce Market With QoSMetrics Acquisition

In an effort to provide monitoring and diagnostic tools to service providers for IPTV and other triple-play services, Symmetricom Inc. has announced the purchase of QoSmetrics Inc. for roughly $16 million in cash.

The deal, which builds on Symetricomm’s time and frequency products and services, comes less than a day after test and measurement giant JDS Uniphase Corp. announced plans to acquire service quality assurance products maker Casabyte Inc. for an undisclosed sum.

The back-to-back deals provide further evidence of the rising importance telcos and cable operators are placing on the QoS they provide, which is especially the case with demanding consumer video services such as IPTV. Test and monitoring vendors have long focused on the underlying physical networks.

“QoSmetrics' system-level solutions and intellectual property assets, which include a broad base of tools to measure key IP performance metrics, as well as to monitor VoIP and video-based data streams, provide a solid foundation for Symmetricom to play a leading role in monitoring and ensuring end users’ quality of experience (QoE),” said Tom Steipp, CEO of Symmetricom.

As IPTV moves toward widespread deployment, industry experts concur that successful implementations and long-term market adoption will require new service assurance solutions and an increasing emphasis on QoE in order to protect the large scale investments being made by network operators around the world.

QoSmetrics said its products provide real-time, multi-protocol, end-to-end monitoring and diagnostic capabilities that enable service providers to troubleshoot and often prevent network issues.

The companies did not say whether QoSmetrics will be assimilated by Symmetricom or operate as a separate unit. The two also did not initially delineate any changes in company management.
