$1,000 iPhone? What????
By Tara Seals
07/22/2008 Sky-high gas prices, inflation, a falling dollar, joblessness, failing businesses, mortgage chaos, the credit crisis ... amid a lot of bad indicators for the economy, we can look to a shining white (actually, black, alluring) example of the fact that disposable income lives. From the You’ve Got to Be Kidding Me file: iPhones are going for $1,000 and up on eBay in the wake of the current shortage. Food ... iPhone ... food ... iPhone (the ‘Bytes is making that on one hand, on the other weighing motion right now). Hmm. A friend at Nokia Siemens Networks also tells me that while visiting a mall in Tulsa, Okla., over the weekend, there was a line snaking out the door of the Apple store and halfway through the mall, of people waiting to snag one of the last remaining iPhones in stock. For all my cynicism, I’m beginning to feel that this whole iPhone thing is becoming much, much bigger than previously thought. Bigger than you, bigger than me, man. It’s the Woodstock of our generation, the turning point for a nation that’s just. Not. Gonna. Take. It. Anymore. An army of young people, armed with decent mobile data rates, fighting back. Or maybe it’s just a bunch of idiots trying to forget the fact that they’ll have to pay their mortgages this month using those 32 percent interest credit cards. Fiddling while Rome burns? Could go either way. Thoughts?
