iPod Launch Sept. 9: Shiny Apple No More?
By Tara Seals
09/05/2008 Apples are supposed to be shiny, but Apple Inc. may be losing its luster. The company is set to release something new at a launch event on Tuesday, Sept. 9, and that new thing probably has something to do with the iPod. A new Nano (again?! Where’s the trade-in program?) with a bigger video screen, maybe, something new for the Classic or the Shuffle ... possibilities abound. Rumors swirl that iTunes will begin offering a subscription model, too, which is something everyone’s been waiting for. The point is, no one seems to care very much. Apple is under a lot of pressure thanks to a constricted product launch schedule in recent months that included the 3G iPhone, but also a long line of gaffes, bugs and missteps, including a massive amount of dropped calls on the iPhone, which never looks good. In short, the company is seeing its wunderkind brand image suffer from a combination of iPhone fatigue and the appearance of rushing things out the door unfinished (isn’t that supposed to be the province of Microsoft Corp.?). Fall is apple-harvesting season, and let’s see if it turns out to be Apple-harvesting time as well.
