AT&T Adds HD to Homezone
Bob Wallace
06/21/2007 Addressing what some felt to be an Achilles heel of the offering, AT&T Inc. has announced that its satellite video package, which it has been providing for many months, now sports access to high-definition programming.
Analysts and some prospective customers of the service, had wondered why AT&T would provide its landline video offering U-verse with HD capabilities and content, but not the satellite package, which is largely designed to reach customers where a terrestrial service doesn’t make economic sense.
AT&T said it is now using a new receiver its gets from DISH Networks to provide HD to Homezone customers. The service is available across AT&T’s entire 13-state broadband footprint.
The carrier said the service boast more than 30 national HD channels and additional local HD channels for each market.
Homezone service integrates AT&T | DISH Network and features of AT&T Yahoo! High Speed Internet. It also features digital video recording technology and remote access to the system through Web-enabled PCs or WAP-2.0 compatible wireless phones.
The carrier said that through June new AT&T | DISH customers will get free HD channels for a year when they order qualifying SD and HD programming and packages. After the free year, AT&T | DISH Network HD programming will be $20 a month.
The monthly $9.99 fee for Homezone service and $5.98 for DVR functionality will remain the same.
